This is the stunning turtle and rooster theme from the mosaic floors of the Aula Theodoriana (in the Basilica) in Aquileia in Italy dated 4th cent.AD.
How delightful and playful!
It would make a great theme for a backsplash mosaic above the cooking area!

It would make a beautiful backsplash! I love rooster art.

It is a wonderful mosaic!
I like the hexagonal layout of the images. Maybe Acquileia will have to be on the 'to visit' short list next time.
ReplyDelete"How delightful"? You people have NO idea what this mosaic is about, do you? It is in the old part of the cathedral in Aquilea, Italy and it was associated with some really NASTY pagan/demonic rituals. On the feast of Neptune, July 23, those loyal to the Tortoise-Satan-would begin a series of revolting sacrifices/rites by speaking a specific incantation over the mosaic medallion swearing allegiance to tortoise and then stepping upon and cursing Rooster-Jesus Christ. A man who had astral travelled back to his past life wherein he saw this whole thing went to Aquilea to repeat it an FREAKED OUT in the midst of it. He'd been lied to by a possessing demon about everything-the astral travel, the past life, & the identity of the tortoise, whom he was told symbolized Christ. He had to go thru a tough exorcism and was catatonic for 10 months. NOTHING is spiritually neutral! Delightful and playful, indeed!
ReplyDeleteThank you for bringing that up Alexander! I had no idea about this.
DeleteVery often beautiful and "innocent things" become associated with evil. That doesn't necessarily make them less "delightuful". But I agree with you. We should always search to find out more about the history and the symbols behind art. At least before using them.
Again, thank you.
I kind of focused on the positive impact of this mosaic.
We need to see the bright side of things. We are otherwise going to be permanenty depressed and scaring people off. That said, we ought to know history. What we do with it, how we project that information out to the world or whether we keep it to ourselves, is another chapter.
